Movin' on out

In case you hadn't noticed, I haven't been updating this blog. I'm doing all my movie & book reviews on my Vox blog, A Trifle One-Sided, and I'll be bringing over the reviews from here and posting them there over time. Hope to see you over there!

What Classic Movie Are You?

One of those silly personality tests that are all over the (web) place. Here's what I am:

Added a movie log

I've added what I'm calling "My Movie Log", which is a simple listing of the movies I've watched. This way, I can just quickly jot down a movie I'v watched all the way through, without having to write a full-blown review on it. If/when I do get around to writing a review, I will add a link to the log entry.

Incredible Brightness of Seeing Movie Log

What I'm doing

I picked up a few new DVDs recently at my local grocery store (!). They had a display full of DVDs in the $4-$9 price range, so I picked up:
  • High Fidelity [Info] [Rent] [Buy], a movie I liked alot when I watched it a year ago or so.
  • Muppet Treasuer Island [Info] [Rent] [Buy] : we've been on a bit of a pirate kick lately in our reading, and this looks like it fits right in. Our first viewing was a success, and I hope to report on it soon.
  • Outfoxed [Info] [Rent] [Buy] : A documentary on how the "Fair And Balanced" Fox "News" Channel, isn't really.
You can read my review of High Fidelity here. Suffice to say, I really like this movie.

I still have the two Ingmar Bergman movies from Netflix, which are Wild Strawberries [Info] [Rent] [Buy] and Fanny & Alexander [Info] [Rent] . I just haven't had the energy to read subtitles on these serious movies! Not sure how I ended up with two Bergman moives - yikes!

I also recently received Chungking Express [Info] [Rent] [Buy], yet another subtitled movie, albeit probably much less cerebral. I need to make my 3 movies that I get from Netflix have a little more variety.

Oh, and it looks like I forgot to let you know that I posted my positive review of Les Diaboliques. It can be found here.

New Year's resolution

Like my New Year's resolution so far? It was "Post something to my blogs every day" - ha! Here it is, the end of January, and this is the first post of the year for any of them (I also have a FreeBSD blog here, and a couple of other implemented but not actually started ones (one on the girls and another on my reading). Jeez, how hard can it be!

Well, I did post a review of Lost In Translation, a very very very low key movie that was fairly interesting. I also need to post one on Les Diabolique, which I enjoyed a lot. It will come, I hope!

Watching with the girls

I don't think there is anything that gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling more than settling down on a cold, dark, rainy winter afternoon and watching a funny kid flick with my two little girls (5 and 4). We head downstairs to the home theater, turn down the lights, pull up a warm blanket and fire up the DVD player.

Today it was Pixar's Monster's Inc. [Info] [Buy] from 2001 and we all had a grand time. They both enjoyed the show and I liked it well enough, but just being with my girls and giggling to a silly movie made it all worthwhile. You can read my full review here.

Picking it up on Friday made me realize just how little I missed the Blockbuster video store experience. It being a rainy Friday evening, the place was mob, the shelves were a disaster, the employees harried (even if they kept calling out from the register "Next guest please" - give me a break already!), hardly any movies were around and the crowd was young and noisy. Yeecchh! I've always figured I'd get the hard to find movies from Netflix and pick up the more popular ones that Blockbuster serves up by the dozen locally, but perhaps it is time to change that idea. I'd rather not have to go back in there again, if you ask me! Give me Netflix any day.

I also watched one of my Netflix movies last (Friday) night. In The Bedroom [Info] [Buy] stars Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson as parents of a fresh out of high schooler who falls in love with a much older woman. Set in Camden, Maine, it was an earnest effort, with many Oscar nominations. You can read my review here.

Netflix Friends

I see that Netflix has begun a "Friends" feature, that allows you to share your movie list. If you'd like to be added to my friend's list (and vice versa, I guess), please feel free to drop me an email at jdarnold@buddydog.org.
