Netflix Deep Sixes me

Ouch. Netflix is dropping HD-DVD:

You're receiving this email because you have asked to receive high-definition movies in the HD DVD format. As you may have heard, most of the major movie studios have recently decided to release their high-definition movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. In order to provide the best selection of high-definition titles for our members, we have decided to go exclusively with Blu-ray as well.

While we will continue to make our current selection of HD DVD titles available to you for the next several months, we will not be adding additional HD DVD titles or reordering replacements.

Toward the end of February, HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs. Don't worry, we will contact you before this happens.

Looks like maybe my birthday present to myself is going to be a PS3 player...

Sorry to hear about that. (I say as I breathe a sigh of relief about going BluRay.)If you get a PS3 be sure to buy Uncharted. :P

The PS3 seems to be the de facto standard for BluRay, especially since the new specs seem to indicate that any player is going to be required to have a net connection in order to function.  Might as well get one that doubles as a gaming system, too!

My HD-DVD player and I mourn with you.

I didn't think Blu-Ray would make it, I don't think its so big over here or maybe i'm just opening my eyes to it.

Well, I knew a PS3 was probably in my future, I just didn't realize how close that future was. I think it was the driving force to BluRay - that and a lot of Sony Pictures money. I wonder if HD would have done better if Microsoft had been able to build in an HD player to the 360?

Rumor was MS was planning to do just that, and it was going to be announced at the HD DVD keynote at CES...but then WB dropped the format 2 days before and they canceled it all.
